About Laser Eye Surgery Consultations

If you are interested in laser eye surgery to correct your vision, we provide consultations for our patients who want to learn more about this procedure. During a laser eye surgery consultation, our doctors will perform a comprehensive eye exam to understand your eye health and prescription.

During this exam, we will determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure and review surgery options. You may be a candidate for laser eye surgery if you have stable vision, good eye health, and thick corneas—an optometrist can confirm this during a consultation.

How Laser Eye Surgery Corrects Vision

While there are several different types of laser eye surgery procedures, they generally work to correct vision problems with a laser that uses pulses of ultraviolet light to target small amounts of corneal tissue.

It is important to note that laser eye surgery can successfully correct vision, but it is not a guarantee of perfect vision or that you may not have to wear glasses in the future.

Types of Laser Eye Surgeries

At Yonge & College Optometry, we provide consultations for PRK, LASIK, ICL, and SMILE surgical procedures, and our doctors can help you to compare each to find the right procedure for you.

The LASIK procedure involves creating an incision in the cornea so the laser can remove corneal tissue. A new LASIK technology called Wavefront involves eye mapping for even more accuracy.

During the procedure, your surgeon will use a precision instrument to create a small flap to access the part of your cornea that requires reshaping. Using an excimer laser, your surgeon removes tiny amounts of corneal tissue to precisely correct your refractive error. Once the reshaping process is complete, your surgeon carefully places the flap back into place to heal.

LASIK can be successful for many vision problems. However, it is not a solution for preventing presbyopia, which involves close-up vision clarity diminishing with age.

In a PRK procedure, the cornea’s outer layer is removed, and a small amount of tissue is removed underneath with the laser. During PRK, just enough tissue is removed to reshape the cornea.

PRK is usually ideal for people whose cornea may be too thin to safely allow for the corneal flap needed for LASIK. PRK can correct refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.

An ICL procedure involves placing an artificial lens between the eye’s existing lens and iris to help refract light onto the retina. ICL can be an option for those who may not qualify for other types of laser eye surgery.

As with other forms of laser vision correction, ICL can help treat issues like myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. While ICL surgery isn’t necessary to correct vision problems, it can help eliminate or reduce the need for glasses or contact lenses.

The SMILE procedure involves an infrared laser creating a circular shaped bit of tissue in the cornea. A small incision is made with the laser into the cornea where the circular tissue can be removed. This adjusts the shape of the cornea, and helps to correct nearsightedness.
